Amazonas Park & Zoo

Amazonas Park is a private zoo in the northeast of Crete. The zoo's focus is on animals from South America, especially parrots and monkeys. There are also some domestic animals such as donkeys and goats. Amazonas Park opened in 2011. Since then, it has enjoyed growing popularity. During the season several hundred visitors arrive at the animal park every day. Some companies offer day trips by bus to the largest zoo in Crete in their program. The parking lot opposite the entrance is often full in the summer so try and plan to get there early. We visited in April with the grandchildren and family and had great time here. The highlight is being able to feed the Lemurs and Monkeys as you pass through their enclosures - a small pot of food is sold when the staff give you their presentation of the park and it is reasonably priced. Be aware that the Lemurs are lying in wait and will jump on you as soon as you are through the gate. Very gentle animals and we were surprised by how soft their paws are and it is a real experience to be remembered… As it was April the weather was quite cool but we worked up a thirst with walking around the zoo - it is built on a hillside and quite steep in places and can be a little difficult if you are “unsteady” on your feet. In warmer months be sure to take water to drink and rest whenever you can… Just a short drive of around 20mins from Neapoli and offers some stunning and beautiful views over the valley, Neapoli and hillside. The major tourist resorts such as Hersonissos, Malia and Agios Nikolaos are less than 30 kilometers away.

A 150-year family story The story of the Vassilakis family olive business is interwoven with the history of the Mirambello Valley. It begins more than 150 years ago when the first Manolis Vassilakis –“Vassilomanolis”- realized his vision to build a “fabrica” (olive mill) to press the olives harvested from the millennium-old trees of his olive grove. He searched the area for just the right stone, a huge millstone, and with the help of several men rolled it for days over the uneven ground up the hill to Agia Sophia village. The stone olive mill was one of the first in the valley, producing life-giving olive oil for the family and their little community for many years. A very short drive from Neapoli Town or you could easily take a taxi from the Taxi rank on the main square. The factory offers a free tour and you can easily find this information on Google or Trip advisor…
